Selection of Pan Am Games Website Screencaps

An Online Guide to the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games

With international athletes converging on Toronto in 2015, the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games organizers required a robust website offering participants, spectators, and media access to comprehensive event information and detailed results data.

Opportunity

Having successfully won the bid to host the largest sporting event in the history of Toronto, the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games organizing committee required a world-class online portal to provide spectators with everything they needed to enjoy the games. Not only did the website need to provide up-to-date sports scores, but it also needed to act as the central repository for information about venues, merchandise, cultural events, and media updates.

Solution

The marketing agency of record for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games called on MitreBox UXD to help on what they knew would be an interesting and challenging project. Over a 6-month period, the MitreBox UXD team worked in close collaboration with the various teams tasked with marketing, organizing and hosting the games.

Through workshops, stakeholder interviews, and ongoing planning sessions, MitreBox UXD conducted in-depth requirements gathering and concept definition. With a concept in place, MitreBox UXD developed an extensive set of wireframes and functional specification documentation outlining everything from the integration of scoring feeds, to venue and way-finding details, multimedia integration, and sport/athlete specific content. Designed to support evolving marketing initiatives, it grew from a website that recruited youth to design TO2015’s mascot, to a pre-games website that drove awareness and inspired participation, and then ultimately became the official Games Time site.

Results

Toronto2015.org attracted and sustained over 22 million visitors by providing information and competition event scores to visitors in an accessible and scalable manner. The website seamlessly integrated with the Atos real-time scoring system, providing up to the second medal counts, scores, and athlete statistics. While scaling to support the waves of spectator and fan traffic, the solution also allowed a very small content team to manage all aspects of the games online presence. Content managers were able to effectively and efficiently deliver continuous updates and information under aggressive timelines with limited resources.
